ABOUT THE DEVICE
Essure is a permanent birth control system developed, marketed and sold by Bayer AG, the international pharmaceutical and device company. According to the manufacturer the system is 99.83 percent effective in permanent birth control by creating scar tissue within a woman’s fallopian tubes to block naturally released eggs from dropping into the uterus. Hundreds of thousands of women have the Essure system implanted within their reproductive tract.
PURPOSE OF THE DEVICE
Essure is sold as a permanent birth control system with nearly perfect effectiveness without the use of hormones, chemicals, or drugs.
WARNINGS
ABC News conducted a special report that brought to light tens of thousands of complaints made by women who had the device inserted.
In 2015 after an extensive review of thousands of medical complaint data, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) panel assigned to evaluate these extensive complaints issues the patient safety advisories recommending that patients with nickel allergies and other uterine problems should not use the device, as well as, doctors inserting the device should have more training and should provide additional patient counseling. The FDA then went on to recommend black box warnings.
SAFETY ISSUES
Thousands of women claim that the device is not safe or effective, contrary to the manufacturer’s marketing materials. These women have suffered from serious side effects including allergic reactions to the nickel based internal metal coil. Additional injuries include perforation of internal organs, nerve damage, intense pain, bleeding, cramps, surgical intervention, inability to have sexual intercourse, and headaches.
Furthermore, deaths of both women with the device and their unborn fetuses have been reported and linked to Essure.
